During pregnancy the tissue between the six pack muscle can stretch, causing a gap in the muscle known as a diastasis recti. Approximately 30% of women will experience this in their first pregnancy and 65% in subsequent pregnancies. This gap leaves the abdomen and spine unsupported and may result in back pain, pelvic pain, incontinence or a tummy that doesn’t look the way you want it to. Sit ups do NOT help to heal this, they actually make the gap worse, and for this reason many women are uncertain as to what exercises to do.

(If you are not confident whether you have a diastasis or not, the workshop includes an individual assessment by a physiotherapist.)
